Veterinary dentistry

Why use a veterinarian for your horse's dental needs?

Registered veterinarians are trained professionals who have undertaken further education in equine dentistry to ensure your horse receives an adequate standard of care. They are accountable for their actions and governed by state bodies which ensures they adhere to current standards and welfare regulations.

Veterinarians typically use a history, examination, assessment and treatment approach, meaning each dental procedure is uniquely tailored to each horse. Plus it's more than just teeth, as other pathology can be found during routine visits, including tumours, infections, feed impactions, foreign bodies, or wounds.

Veterinarians are the only professionals who are qualified and legally allowed to sedate your horse. This allows them to sedate every horse safely for routine and more advanced dental procedures.

Benefits of sedation

  • Reduced stress and pain experienced by your horse (analgesics, or pain relievers, are commonly used in routine sedative protocols).
  • Sedation allows a thorough examination of the mouth and teeth using a light and mirror.
  • Problems are detected early and treatment can be implemented before its too late!
  • Sedation reduces the time required to perform a procedure, which means reduced time of any discomfort experienced by your horse.
  • Increased safety of yourself and the practitioner during a procedure.
  • Sedation allows time to clean sheath, remove beans and check for tumours!

The ultimate reason is to ensure maximal comfort to the horse during mastication and when ridden or driven.
